This is one of the two bachelor gorillas at the Santa Barbara Zoo in Santa Barbara, California.
In the wild, gorillas form social groups called troops. Each troop is led by a single, dominant male called a silverback. Female gorillas tend to stay in the troop where they were born. Males, however, at the age of five to six years, will leave and join a group of other young males. The resulting group is called a bachelor troop.
Average Lifespan: Up to 50 years.
Diet: Gorillas are vegetarians and eat plants, vegetables, and fruit.
Geography: Central Africa, near the mouth of the Congo River.
Babies: Females give birth to live young every 3.5-4.5 years and are typically pregnant for 8 to 10 months.
Conservation Status: Critically Endangered.
