Description
The Big Screw On An Antique Wine Press by Floyd Snyder
This is a the big screw that sits on top of a antique wine press that is tightened down to press the juice out of the grapes. This is the method that replaced to even older method of actually using people in a big vat that actually stomped the grapes with the bare feet.
This old press sits at Harmon Cellars in Harmony, California, population 18. The town was once owned by famed singer songwriter, Barry Manilow.
Be it a toilet-seat shrine to a star of the silver screen, a blue door more famous than most people, or our one and only fire truck mysteriously ending up on a rooftop in L.A., we've never exactly been on a first-name basis with ‘normal’.
A long-established fixture of California’s Central Coast, the town of Harmony has a rich supporting history. Founded in 1869 around a burgeoning local dairy industry, Harmony served as the home of the Harmony Valley Creamery Association and de facto capital of Central Coast dairy production for nearly half a century, while also serving as a picturesque pit-stop for the rich-and-famous on their way to visit William Randolph Hearst just up the road.
Following the ultimate closure of the creamery, Harmony’s population steadily waned as the community saw much of the state’s dairy production transition from the Central Coast to the Central Valley. While undergoing periods of relative dormancy. Today our 2.5-acre, one-block town ‘bustles’ once again.
Home to the Harmony Valley Creamery and its famous Scoop Truck, Harmony Glass Works and Harmony Pottery Shop artisan galleries and the Harmony Chapel & Gardens, Harmony has become a quirky and quaint must-stop destination for both local residents and tourists alike.
Harmony Cellars is a small family-owned winery committed to producing fine wines at affordable prices. Founded in 1989 by Chuck and Kim Mulligan, the winery has grown from a 2,000 case micro winery to a 7,500 case boutique production facility. If you have tasting room questions or would like to purchase from a selection of unique gift items, Kim and her staff are there to assist you daily. They pride themselves on superior customer service and prompt shipment of wine orders.
You will certainly enjoy the small town ambiance and rural setting at the Harmony Cellars location. Winemaking in Harmony is not new and the tradition harks back to the late 1800s. Kim's great-grandfather, Giacomo Barlogio, a founder of the old creamery cooperative in "downtown" Harmony, used to make homemade wine down in his basement. Today's winery sits on a part of Giacomo's original land holdings; land that's been in Kim's family for four generations.
We are fortunate that part of the original Harmony Creamery still stands today and invite you to wander the old brick pathways surrounding this charming, old building and become part of days gone by.
