Harley Lights by Barbara Snyder
I spent a three day weekend in Monterey California back in the first week of February 2013. We drove up the normally beautiful, scenic and famous coastal Highway One. But it was anything but scenic. It was all cold rain and wet fog for the entire trip north. Not exactly the kind of day I was hoping for.
On the way back however, it was still not a perfect "sun shinny day" as the song goes but the weather was much improved, although it was still colder then I can ever remember it being in Monterey.
Not many people were stopped along the way at the many turnouts as there usually is. But there was this one motorcycle rider that had stopped in a wide spot in the road with his Harley. He looked like he was in trouble so I pulled over and stopped, good sanitarian that I always am. Well, almost always.
And there it was a great angle and great view of the famous Bixby Bridge in the misty distance. And there also set this beautiful nearly new "Hog" just begging to have its picture taken against this beautiful background. (What? You never saw a hog beg?) I couldn't have staged it any better than that.
The rider was a returning home from his "weekend" house on 17 Mile Drive. (Who has a weekend home on 17 mile drive?!)
As it turns out he was a member of the invisible side of the rich and famous Hollywood industry; a producer, director, stuntman, cameraman, or writer or something of that nature.
We struck up a conversation and as these things seem too happened, he was best friends with the guy that owned our local Harley Davidson dealership. He was really pleased that I would be interested in having his bike in a photograph.
I asked for his address so I could send him a copy but he said no, that was okay, I didn't have to do that. I think he wanted to make sure I didn't turn into a stalker of something. I guess if you have enough money to own a "weekend" home on 17 Mile Drive, it is more of a top of the mind awareness kind of thing. This is not a problem I have to deal with.
In the entire 3 day weekend we only got a few shots that were we liked, this being one of them. However I did manage to somehow contact a severe case poison ivy for my trouble.
Oh, I guess I should mention that he was not in trouble at all. He was just stretching his legs and enjoying that beautiful view of the Bixby Bridge. This was another good example of getting a shot that I really, really like and all quit by accident.
