Description
Great Ape of Monkey Island Santa Maria California by Floyd Snyder
This is not a live ape. It is a two-dimensional cut out of a great ape. Monkey Island is located in Waller Park near Santa Maria, California.
For years the island was actually home to a large number of monkeys. Waller Park is owned and operated by The County of Santa Barbara. The monkeys were removed as part of budget cuts back in the 1970s or '80s. To this day a lot of people are still complaining that it should have never happened they the monkeys should be returned.
The Hominidae, whose members are known as great apes or hominids, are a taxonomic family of primates that includes eight extant species in four genera: Pongo; Gorilla; Pan; and Homo, of which only modern humans remain.
